Project Thunderbolt, The LS3 V8 Miata - Part 3: The Engine Arrives and Surgery Begins!

In this update, we start by freeing our engine from the box that it’s been living in for far too long. You already know that we’ve chosen the powerful and compact LS3 for this build, but which LS3? Chevrolet offers a few options and while 430 horsepower is awesome and 480 horsepower is incredible, 525 horsepower is just over the top enough to be perfect!

Introducing the LS376/525, the most powerful production-based crate engine in Chevrolet Performance's portfolio. 6.2 liters, 525 horsepower at 6,300 rpm and 489 lb.-ft. at 4,400 rpm. Oh yeah, that ought to do it!

After admiring this amazing piece of engineering for a bit, I brought out the cutting tools and got right to work making the necessary engine bay and interior modifications in order to make it fit. After many hours of cutting and pounding, we’re well on our way to making a cozy home for this angry aluminum monster in our Miata.

Here's the video version of this update. Check it out!

Thanks for reading and watching, see ya next time!
